Wall Jumper" by Fernando Sánchez Castillo at Ostrale 2017
The Foundation of Arts & Music for Dresden supports the "Wall Jumper" by Fernando Sánchez Castillo (*1970) who developed this art project specifically for OSTRALE (2017, Installation, Plastic Injection, 2,300 single figures 20 x 300 x 300 cm). Visitors are asked to stage their own photos with one of the 2,300 Wall Jumper figures and to post them online.
Approximately 5,000 people fled Eastern Berlin by jumping the wall during its construction phase. Conrad Schumann was the first. It was a courageous and peaceful act that has changed the world and the lives of many. Fernando Sánchez Castillo scanned live models with real uniforms and guns and he studied the anatomy of the original photographs and films in order to create his own model. He made a prototype sizing 9 cm that was reproduced 2,300 times via plastic injection. The stunning installation is presented at OSTRALE in room „H 5“.
2015, the foudnation had invited the Spanish artist to live and work in Dresden for a period of six months. In his home country, Fernando Sánchez Castillo is one of the most important artists of his generation. He is well own e.g. for his project „Tank Man“ that honors the man who, holding shopping bags in his hands, blocked the tanks on Tian'anmen Square in 1989. Fernando Sánchez Castillo showed his installation „Tank Man“ during his residency in the Albertinum in Dresden.
