Production at the Staatsschauspiel Dresden
A man on the home stretch to autocracy: on the battlefield Macbeth has eliminated the traitorous Thane of Cawdor and the Norwegians. When three witches meet him and prophesy that he will soon be number one in the state and the appointment as king promptly comes, he follows a murderous plan to accelerate his career. Where he shows scruples, his power-hungry wife Lady Macbeth gets him back on track by pulling out all the stops of gender manipulation strategies.
It's all about maintaining power at any price. Murder follows murder. Until the trail of blood leads to Macbeth's own death and "European nihilism experiences its hour of birth," as the Swiss Germanist Peter von Matt writes. With Lady and Sir Macbeth, Shakespeare invented the most gruesome pair of killer lovers in literary history. The murder, however, does not go unpunished: reeling between blood and insomnia, Macbeth suffers from feelings of guilt. And true to the prophecies of the Sisters of Mischief, the Forest of Birnam moves menacingly toward Macbeth at the end, heralding his death.
Christian Friedel is this Macbeth and this time on a triple mission: he directs, plays the title role and composes the music together with his band Woods of Birnam.
