Greetings to Dresden

Amy Bryce – Internationale Musikstipendiatin 2019

"I’m quite an interactive artist. I always work best with other people where there is opportunity to discuss, experiment and explore. These months have been much more solitary than I’m used to, so I’ve taken this opportunity to refine the skills that require a lot of time and effort. These are some graphic scores which are an excerpt from my immersive opera, ‘A Kinder Society’. In this scene, the singer holds the shell to her ear and exclaims that “if you listen carefully enough, you can hear the sea!” She then encourages the audience to try. It is important to me that the scores allow freedom for the vocalist to interact with the audience and that the character of the piece can be seen in the artistry of the score.

It is rare in life to suddenly find yourself with this much time and space when you expected to be so busy. It can provide clarity and reflection, opening your eyes to how things were before and give you greater aspirations for the future. There is not a single person I know who doesn’t miss live music terribly and I hope that when we find normality again, we will do so with a greater sense of what is important."
