Talk by Chris Dercon

Chris Dercon

The Foundation of Arts & Music for Dresden and the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden (State Art Collections Dresden) proudly invite you to a

Public talk by Chris Dercon at Lipsiusbau, Georg-Treu-Platz 2, 01067 Dresden on 23rd October 2015, 7 p.m.

The director of the Tate Modern in London and future director of the Berlin theater Volksbühne will present his thoughts about "The future of cultural institutions". Audience research, audience engagement together with the ensuing discourse in cultural participation are on the daily agenda of museums worldwide. If 20 years ago we achieved the democratisation of access to art along with the promotion of its dialogue, now we are striving to activate people through art. Modern and contemporary art was built on the principle: separate and shock. The new art of this century will be based on a new principle: combine and connect. Thinking along the same lines, educating or learning could then be considered as art-activity in itself.

Chris Dercon is an art historian, curator and documentary film maker. He was director of the "Haus der Kunst" in Munich and of the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam as well as of PS1 in New York City. He curated exhibitions with artists, designers and architects, among them André Cadere, Marlene Dumas, Konstantin Grcic, Hans Haacke, Martin Margiela, Herzog & de Meuron, Carlo Mollino, Helio Oiticica, Ai Weiwei and Franz West. His perspectives constructively join different cultural spheres.

We are delighted that Chris Dercon will share with us his experiences as someone who is actively shaping cultural dialogue and who has directed a number of cultural institutions around the globe. We hope to receive from him a fresh stimulus for contemporary arts in Dresden. Following the talk, we will have the opportunity to get into dialogue with Chris Dercon at an informal gathering.

The talk takes place as part of the lecture series "Impulse Dresden" and is a project of the Foundation of Arts & Music for Dresden. The foundation was established in 2012 as a non-partisan supporter of music, contemporary art and cultural education. With this invitation, the foundation and the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden seek to inspire the dialogue and networking for contemporary arts in Dresden.

The public lecture will be held in a combination of English and German. Admission is free. We kindly ask you to access Lipsiusbau from the entrance Brühlsche Terrasse. We are looking forward to welcoming you to Chris Dercon's talk!
